Students
Aspire Programme
We have a bespoke Aspire Programme at Newman Sixth that is designed specifically for our High Prior Attaining students to help them to excel beyond their studies. This programme includes the following strands.
In2Med Programme
This programme runs throughout Year 12 and 13 and is for students at the start of their journey in the field of Medicine.
Students are mentored by medical students and doctors from across the UK who want to give back to local communities. Alongside mentoring, the programme also involves various webinars and provides students with a variety of resources to help them with their studies, entrance examinations, writing their personal statement and interview preparation.
The ultimate goal of the programme is to help young students with a passion for Medicine get into Medical School and to support students who decide to pursue non-Medicine pathways to make informed decisions about their future.
Part of the In2Med programme this year involved students participating in a STEM Hackathon at Imperial University, London. Of all the teams entered from across the country, Newman 6th won two awards for the ‘Judges Choice’ and ‘Most Innovative Idea’. In addition to these accolades, the Judges also personally commended one of our own students on their ‘Lifestyle Essay’.
Oxbridge Programme
This programme runs from Year 12 to Christmas time of Year 13 and is for students who are hoping to take up a place at Oxford or Cambridge University.
Students are selected for this programme based on their GCSE profile and are mentored by our Oxford graduate and Biology teacher, Miss Jenkins. This programme involves weekly meetings and Socratic discussions, guidance on keeping reading journals, wider reading, support with personal statement writing and interview preparation.
Students are supported by our Oxbridge Alumnae who visit regularly to offer advice, feedback on personal statements and to help lead mock interviews.
Each year we run a residential trip to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, which includes subject seminars and lectures on the Admissions process.
